STARTUP EUROPE: Photon Robot Meets Poland’s President Andrzej Duda

photonrobot1

Photon is an interactive robot that teaches children how to code. It’s the first robot in the world that develops along with your child bringing an entirely new and innovative approach to education. Learning should be fun and this is exactly where Photon steps in!

Being such a unique product and offering a very innovative and useful service, Photon won the Microsoft Imagine Cup in 2015, and was part of the Microsoft Imagine Cup Acceleration Program. After winning this outstanding competition, META Zernike Ventures invested in Photon through its Xplorer Fund, the first proof of concept type of fund in Poland. Xplorer Fund (Poland) can finance technology driven projects or startups, and Photon is a perfect example of a successful idea brought to life.

With such an innovative product, it comes as no surprise that Photon managed to reach its Kickstarter campaign goals by raising $52,829 in just 5 days! Its international success brought the company into the spotlight and got the creators a chance to meet Poland’s President Andrzej Duda at an event held at Bialystok University of Technology on September 13, 2016.

Photon was invited to present its unique and original product to the President of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Duda, ambassadors, representatives of the State Treasury companies, venture capital and business angels.

“This is a unique award. We did not expect that we will get an invitation to the Presidential Palace and will be able to present our product there. Such things do not happen too often!”, says Marcin Joka, CEO of Photon.

STARTUP EUROPE: Interview with TellVet

tellvet_logo

Q: Tell us a little bit about your startup. Where did the idea come from? When? How many founding members were there in the initial team? Where does the name stand for? What kind of entrepreneurial experience does the current team have? Have they built successful companies in the past?
A: The idea of creating a telemedicine referral service was born about a year ago, among scientists at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Poland. By designing an innovative mobile application and through a successful cooperation with the Klinika XP program, the most popular desktop application in Polish veterinary clinics, we;ve managed to create the first integrated veterinary telemedicine system. TellVet provides direct access to leading specialists in various fields of veterinary medicine via mobile application, web service and Klinika XP program. The idea of creating the TellVet system came from its founder Marcin Nowicki DVM, Ph.D, who is a scientist, university teacher, IT specialist and founder of TellVet company. Name of the company stands for “tel” (telecommunication, telephone), “tell” (tell vet) and “vet” (veterinary, veterinarian). The current team consists of two people. Marcin Nowicki has an entrepreneurial experience as an owner of a service company in 2006-2010.

Q: What does a startup need to accomplish in its first year to be a success and have an impact?
A: TellVet needs finances for advertising the new launched services, for building a strong brand and to gain the leading position on the domestic market. The company needs help in obtaining contacts with foreign partners (especially software companies associated with veterinary medicine, manufacturers or distributors of diagnostic equipment). After that, our company plans to make a multi-language platform and to start the implementation of our services to the other European markets.

Q:What will the company look like in a year? From any and all perspectives — product, people, team, revenue?
A: Product/services:
increasing sale of services in Poland
strong leader position on the Polish market
developed TellVet system to multilingual platform for veterinarians
obtained cooperation with foreign partners and widespread our technological solution in other countries of Europe

Team:
team increased by partners

Revenue:
achieved revenues attractive for investors

Q:How big is the market for the product? How fast is it growing? Is this a stable market or one that is so cutting edge that nobody yet recognizes it’s even a market? Is the market focused on consumers or businesses?
A: Worldwide – human telemedicine market is estimated at $ 27 billion. Only in USA $ 12,7 billion in 2014. In recent years we have seen a dynamic growth of human telemedicine.

Our market – Veterinary telemedicine is just beginning in the World!

Businesses:
Poland 15 000 veterinarians
Europe 200 000 veterinarians

Consumers:
Poland: 8 mln dogs, 6 mln cats, 6 mln exotics = 20 mln customers
Europe: 75 mln dogs, 90 mln cats, 106 mln exotics = 271 mln customers (see below)

European zoo mark
Annual sales of pet food products: € 13,8 billion
Annual value of pet related products and services: € 11 billion
Population of pets in Europe is still growing

Q: What sets the company apart in the market? Why do consumers choose your product over the competition? What competitive advantages does the company have to offer?
A: Poland: Our customers choose our services because there is no other company that provides similar services. TellVet is the only company of its kind on the Polish market.
Europe: In some European countries there are only Internet services based on the usual websites. There are no services in Europe integrated with software for veterinary clinics. There are no services in the world that use a mobile application that provides access to specialists. Our mobile application is available on Android, Windows Mobile and iOS.

Q: What is the current runway? Start-ups vary in funding from being „paycheck to paycheck” to having over $1B. Also who are the investors? Do they take an active role?
A: Our first investor was Foundation Neo Media. The Foundation has helped us in many areas – obtaining financing, legal assistance and development of the system. The Foundation is still taking an active role in our runway.

Q: How did the TWIST project help your startup? What were the key points that helped in your startup’s development? Would you recommend the program to other entrepreneurs, startups or would be entrepreneurs?
A: We hope that TWIST will help our company to obtain foreign partners and with obtaining finances for further development. If so, we definitely can recommend the TWIST project to other entrepreneurs, startups or would be entrepreneurs.

Q: How will the company scale as it grows? Does the company have the infrastructure in place to take advantage of the opportunity?
A: After the first requests from foreign vets, we created the possibility of registration of European clinics and adapted the system to handle international payments. We are ready to take advantage of every opportunity
Now let’s get down to some relaxing and informal questions to have a better look at your startup’s culture, people, ambience, and values.

Q: What does the office look like at 8PM?
A: At 8PM our office is only relocated but still working and we are still in touch.

Q: When is the last time the team members met after work — what was the occasion?
A: Last time the team members met in July, after work, in a very memorable day, on the 15th of July 2015, when we got our first order.

Q: What % of the team would you invite to your house for a party?
A: 100%

Q: Would you want your best friend to join this startup?
A: I am not sure if I would like to take this step. There are no friends in business, I think.

imagecamplodz

On Thursday, 8th December, at the Lodz University of Technology, young people considering starting their own businesses and seeking support participated at Imagine Camp Lodz, as part of the TWIST Polish Bootcamp – COOKING FOR A SMARTER CITY. They had opportunity to acquire theory and practice delivered by the experts from DotConnect, Xplorer, STARTUP EUROPE – TWIST, Swiss Contribution and Microsoft.

Imagine Camp Lodz is an event organized through the project for supporting Polish start-ups. Its central point is the Imagine Cup competition where one can find young people with business ideas and goals. They are supported by, for example, business accelerator DotConnect, Xplorer Fund, Swiss Contribution Fund and STARTUP EUROPE through its project – TWIST. The event in the capital of the Lodz voivodeship will be, therefore, a meeting between people who wish to run companies and start-up supporters in Poland.

4.5 hours of inspiration, motivation and priceless knowledge during the TWIST Polish Bootcamp

On Thursday, students had the opportunity to listen to experts and specialists in innovative business creation. The main goal of the event was to inspire them to implement their projects. During the 2-hour lectures, taking part in the F10, LODEX lecture house in 215 Wólczańska Street, they got to know about Imagine Cup – the world’s biggest competition for students in which 1.65 million of participants from 190 countries took part. What is more, the representatives of the companies organizing and supporting the event answered the question on how to create a successful business product.

Lecturers gave tips and inspiration. They also showed that it was possible to achieve ambitious business goals with people sharing the same values.

The TWIST Polish Bootcamp continued at 6:30 p.m. at Starbucks Sukcesja at 1 Politechniki Avenue. The event was in the form of Business Speed Dating and allowed for discussions with developers, designers and business tycoons. Those 2 hours appeared to a big opportunity for those who were looking for people to work with in the Imagine Cup projects. A number of participants received attractive cooperation offers.

Face to face with start-up mentors

Imagine Camp Lodz appeared to be the path to the world of start-ups for many young people. Among the experts students could meet was DotConnect – a business accelerator supporting innovative solutions at their initial stage of development. It offers mentoring, authorial accelerator programs, financial support and assistance in finding innovative promotional solutions. DotConnect is also responsible for central business acceleration of the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2017 competition.

Except for DotConnect, also Twist, the representatives of STARTUP EUROPE, attended the event. The organization was created to support European start-ups through education and access to new markets or financial support for new companies. For Twist this is a special event as the main prize in the Imagine Camp Lodz contest is Dev’s Kitchen.

Among participants there were two companies from the world of start-up support: Xplorer – a fund heavily investing in technical projects at their initial stages of development – and Swiss Fund, which offers non-refundable financial assistance. Also, the prime mover of Imagine Cup, Microsoft, had to be there. Imagine Camp Lodz was additionally supported by the Marshal’s Office in Lodz. Imagine Camp Lodz increased students’ knowledge about running companies and the ways of project implementation. For many of them, it appeared to be the first step into their careers.

20120307_Innowacje_z_Warmii_i_Mazur
